Women's Soccer Edged by No. 3 Waubonsee

Elgin, Ill., Sept. 22, 2021 – The Elgin Community College women's soccer team was edged 2-1 by No. 3 Waubonsee on Wednesday.

The Spartans move to 3-3-1 as the Chiefs continue an undefeated streak at 8-0.

Waubonsee held possession the majority of the first half, totaling over 20 shots and shots on goal, keeping Joana Mercado busy in the box and starting defenders Kayla Mathis, Anayeli Perez, Natalia Vargas and Jocelyne Mercado on their toes.

The Chiefs were able to break through Elgin's defense when awarded with a corner kick in the 25th minute. The initial kick placed the ball right in front of the goal, with multiple opponents taking shots before one finally made its way to the back of the net for Waubonsee to take the 1-0 lead.

Elgin continued to keep the game competitive in the second, despite Waubonsee's continued possession.

The Chiefs capitalized on a penalty kick awarded in the 72nd minute, sending the ball just out of Mercado's reach.

With 8:04 left in the game, Kaley Kowal received a long pass and outran two defenders to take a shot. The goalkeeper deflected the ball, but Kowal was able to score off of the deflection to tighten up the game to 2-1.

Despite the momentum, Elgin was unable to create any more opportunities as the clock ran out with a 2-1 loss.

Mercado totaled a season-high 21 saves in the box.

The Spartans are back on the road to face the College of DuPage on Friday at 4 p.m.
