
Sugar Grove, Ill. - The Elgin Community College softball team opened conference play with a pair of losses at Waubonsee on Tuesday.
The Spartans move to 0-10 overall and 0-2 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play.
Game One: ECC 2, WCC 11
Waubonsee scored one run in the first inning to take the early lead.
Kaylee Shin led off the second with a single and made it to second on Camila Alonzo's pop fly. Jamyra Thomas grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Veronica Hein hit a sacrifice fly to tie up the game 1-1.
The Chiefs scored four runs in the second and five in the third to increase their lead to 10-1 after three innings.
Sydney Haughs led off the fourth with her first collegiate homerun to put the second run on the board.
WCC scored one more run in the fourth and ECC was unable to score in the fifth as the game ended 11-2 after five innings.
Game Two: ECC 2, WCC 22
The Chiefs got off to a huge offensive start, scoring 21 runs in three innings.
Madelaine Gilpin, Sophie Espolt and Zoe Kaler hit back-to-back singles to load up the bases in the fourth. Haughs and Jamyra Thomas' groundouts pushed two runs across.
Waubonsee scored one more run in the fifth to end the game with a 22-2 final score.
The Spartans resume play at Moraine Valley on April 1 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
