Men's Basketball Secures Runner-Up Finish at Spartan Classic

Elgin, Ill., Dec. 4, 2021 – The Elgin Community College men's basketball team hosted three teams for the Spartan Classic Dec. 3-4.

The Spartans split games on Friday and Saturday to earn a runner-up finish, moving to 4-3 on the season.

The men secured an 83-68 win over Harper College on Friday to begin tournament play.

Jordan Wilkins posted a team-best 19 points and three assists to lead the Spartans.

Dorien Little recorded a season-high 16 points, Justin Henderson grabbed eight rebounds and Jaden Henderson forced three steals. 

ECC held Harper to 29.2 percent shooting in the first half and 39.6 overall.

The Spartans handily led 38-25 at half and despite the Hawks connecting with more shots in the second, were able to pull off the 83-68 victory to advance to the Championship game against Carl Sandburg.

Elgin fell to Sandburg in the Championship game of the Classic on Saturday by a score of 68-57.

Wilkins once again led the team, and registered his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Justin Henderson also secured a double-double with 13 points and the team-high and season-best 13 rebounds, including seven offensively. 

The Chargers commanded the first 10 minutes, scoring 12 unanswered points within eight minutes of play for a 23-7 lead.

In the final six minutes of the first half, the Spartans countered by held the Chargers scoreless through 12 points to tighten up the score to just a five-point deficit at 36-31.

ECC trailed 42-35 entering the second half.

The Spartans struggled to connect shots, shooting just 25.6 percent in the second, compared to 45.2 percent in the first half. With the offensive struggle, the team was unable to challenge the Chargers, ultimately falling 68-57.

The men travel to Freeport, Ill. this weekend for the Highland Community College Tournament. The first match-up will be Olive-Harvey on Friday at 7 p.m.
