Baseball Splits in Conference Opener

Elgin, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team split a pair of games with Morton on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans move to 12-7 in their overall season.

Game One: MC 11, ECC 1

Nick Weaver, Jack Kerno, Aiden Kashuba and Cole Clemens each recorded a hit in the game. Clemens earned an RBI as Daniel Blickhan scored the run.

Brendan Campbell and Miguel Rodriguez pitched two innings and each tallied one strikeout.

Game Two: MC 7, ECC 17

Weaver and Kerno singled and Blickhan reached on an error to load up the bases in the first. Clemens hit an RBI single that allowed Weaver to score for an early 1-0 advantage.

Lucas Aguirre pitched the first and second innings and did not allow any hits or runs. 

Andrew Flynn, Carter Novelli and Weaver singled to get on base in the top of the fourth. Flynn scored on a passed ball during Kerno's at-bat.

Morton scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and three in the fifth to lead 2-7 after five innings.

Austin Alonso and Jonathan Bayler got on base after a pair of errors. Weaver hit an RBI single that Alonso scored on followed by a two-run double from Kerno. During Kashuba's at-bat, Kerno advanced to third and scored on different wild pitches to tighten the game up to 6-7.

Jaden Alberson earned a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error to lead off the seventh inning. Weaver singled to the pitcher allowed Alberson to score. Kerno walked and Colin Swalley was hit by a pitch to get on base. Weaver scored with the other two base runners advancing on a wild pitch. Kerno then scored on a passed ball and Alanis hit a sacrifice fly to send Swalley home for the Spartans' 10th run of the game.

The runs kept coming as Clemens doubled and scored on Chris Lara's single to right field. Flynn walked and Matthew Brunscheen was hit by a pitch to load up the bases once again. Alberson was also hit by a pitch to bring in a run followed by an RBI walk for Weaver. Kerno and Swalley hit back-to-back doubles to bring in two more runs to end the top of the inning.

Elgin held Morton off with two fly outs and a pop out to clinch the 17-7 victory.

Sean Riordan earned his first collegiate win for his effort in the sixth and seventh innings. He allowed no runs and no walks and collected one strikeout.

The Spartans host Joliet for a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
