Baseball Defeats Harper

Elgin, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team picked up a 5-2 win over Harper on Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 23-16 in their overall season.

Edgar Barba earned his fourth win of the season, recording a season-high 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Chris Lara led the offense with three hits as Jack Kerno and Patrick Nelson tallied two apiece.

Daniel Blickhan led off the second with a walk and advanced to third on Josh Collins' single to center field. Lara hit it into a one-run single to put the first run on the board.

Andrew Flynn was hit by a pitch to lead off the next inning. He stole second and made it to third on Nelson's hit. Flynn scored on a passed ball as Nelson advanced to second on the same pitch. Charlie Jury singled, allowing Nelson to get to third base. Blickhan hit an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game after three.

Lara doubled and Nick Weaver hit it into an RBI triple to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Weaver scored on Flynn's groundout for the fifth run.

Harper scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but ECC held them off to clinch the 5-2 victory.

The Spartans host Moraine Valley for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
