Baseball Splits at Rockford

Rockford, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team split a pair of games with the Rockford junior varsity team on Friday.

The Spartans move to 5-6 in their overall season.

Game 1: Rockford 2, Elgin 1

Adrian Ruiz made the start on the mound and only allowed two hits while recording five strikeouts in four innings. Luke Bolender brought Logan Riley for the sole run of the game.

The contest went scoreless until Rockford score one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Riley scored from second base in the seventh inning on Bolender's ground ball to center field to tie it up at 1-1.

The Regents would score one more run to take the 2-1 victory.

Game 2: Rockford 0, Elgin 12

Team leaders included Aiden Kashuba in RBI (three), Eli Johnson in runs (three) and Charlie Jury and Kashuba in hits (two).

Frank Szymanski earned the win with six strikeouts and no runs allowed.

The first two innings went scoreless until Elgin had a huge third inning with five runs. Logan Riley, Jury and Kashuba hit RBI singles and Ryan Nelson and Julian Sturtevant earned RBI walks.

Kashuba brought two more runs and Nelson brought in one in the top of the fourth for an 8-0 advantage.

Four additional runs were tacked on in the fifth to secure the 12-0 shutout victory.

The Spartans travel to face Aurora University's junior varsity team on Tuesday.
